Give trail running a chance!

Give trail running a chance!

Many people long to exercise out in nature. However, why settle for running alongside of the forest? Get off the pavement you usually run on and make your way into the forest! The smell of moss and pine needles and the chirping of birdsong will give you tonnes of energy for your workout. You won’t regret it!

Many benefits

Running on uneven surfaces automatically raises your heart rate without you having to increase your pace. And the natural obstacles you encounter during your run mean that you have to constantly adjust your pace to the surroundings. This creates natural intervals in your workout, which improves fitness.

Another benefit of trail running is that your workout will have plenty of variation, which stimulates the brain and means your body is not subjected to repetitive stress and strain. As a result, musculoskeletal problems are more uncommon in trail runners compared with those who run on flat surfaces. Trail running in the forest works many of the body’s muscles. Leg muscles get the most exercise, but upper body muscles are also given a workout, which contributes to better posture and prevents back pain.

Balance training

Forests are the perfect setting for balance and coordination training. Mix up your running with balance walking on logs, stones and fallen trees. Balance is something that often deteriorates as you get older, and it’s a good idea to train it from time to time.

Dress appropriately

Getting started with trail running does not require any major investments. Regular active-wear is ideal for a run in the forest. However, you should consider wearing clothing that can tolerate some wear and tear. Splashing mud and snagging twigs are run-of-the-mill for trail runners. It’s also a good idea to wear long-sleeved tops and trousers to help prevent skin scratches and abrasions.
